Greenwich Village
Halloween Parade
Oct. 31, 2003                         Central Park

It was a warmer than usual Halloween night in New York City, drawing tens of thousands of spectators to the 30th anniversary of the Greenwich Village parade, commemorated in song by Lou Reed and others. The route up Sixth Avenue from Spring Street to 23rd Street was filled with creative costumes, political messages, and more than a touch of the bizarre.

The Jolly Green Giant recognized a spectator, embraced her, then dragged her over the barricade into the parade.

At the Madison Avenue street festival, carne a la llanera -- country steak -- and sweet fried plantains drew a steady stream of customers and onlookers.
